Como by Design is a three day design showcase in Melbourne, Australia that will see designers each decorate a space of Como House with their own style and flair, bringing a fresh look to the period residence from the grandest to the most humble of spaces.  What an exciting event to see many talented Australian Designers in one place.

Como House

Built in 1847, Como is a mix of Australian Regency and classic Italianate architecture.

Edward Eyre Williams commissioned a single story villa for his wife and himself to reside in 1846 which was then completed the following year.

It is said that Williams proposed to his wife at Lake Como, Italy and that was the reason for naming this new house after the place.  Although the architectural style of Como House is not reminiscent of Lake Como.  You can read more about the history of Como House here.

Como then went on to be sold and owned by others until it was bought by the Armytage family who added various other additions and outbuildings to the home.

The Armytages became famous amongst Melbourne high society and equally famous for their many elegant dances, dinners and receptions.  Those elegant dining and reception rooms are still furnished with Armytage family heirlooms and even the servant’s areas, kitchen and laundry have been preserved.

International Guest – Nina Cambpell

Nina Campbell is one of the world’s most respected and influential interior designers.  Nina Campbell has a beautiful sense of style, her designs appeal to both young and old and sit well in both contemporary and traditional interiors. She is also the author of five books on interior design.

I attended a similar event many years ago as a young mum and Interior Design student and was so excited to receive one of Nina’s autographed books, which I still have today.

There will be a program of seminars run throughout the three days with special guest speakers giving guests the opportunity to hear some of Melbourne’s leading interior designers discussing the latest trends in international design.
