This Spring I have decided to plant some white lavender, I haven’t had Lavender in my garden for such a long time. Growing Lavender is so easy because its a Mediterranean plant and it loves dry and hot conditions, like our hot Summers. Today I have some simple tips to grow beautiful Lavender in your garden or a pot.
Like most plants Lavender loves to be placed in well drained soil and in a sunny position. You can plant Lavender in pots, but don’t forget to make sure your pot has good potty mix and drainage.
Once your Lavender garden is established, these plants are drought hardy but like most plants need a good water in very hot conditions. Don’t over water as they don’t like to have wet feet and to water your potted lavender more often in the warmer months as they tend to dry out more quickly.
Your Lavender will need pruning in late Summer, depending on when it has finished flowering. Lavender can become woody if it isn’t pruned back well, and this will also help the Lavender keep its shape each season.
There are many different and new varieties as well as the traditional French and English Lavender including colours such as pink, white and of course many shades of purple. Your local nursery will have all the current and new lavender plants in stock.
There is a new lavender called “Strawberries and Cream”. This plant is a mix of two different types of lavender. Today I bought one for the garden from Bunnings, it’s a mix of a white lavender and a smaller purple lavender. I bought this type to plant in a cottage garden.
The above variety of Lavenders are available from Bunnings.
Lavender plants make a beautiful display for a hedge in the garden as well as in their own pot. Have you got Lavender growing in your garden? What varieties have you planted?
