When you are planning a big move from one home to another it can seem very overwhelming, but if you make a plan and checklist in advance for moving your home it will be so much easier. Today I have some tips on what you need to know about moving to a new home.

Make A List
Start with a list of what is involved in moving house. Dedicate a new notebook for the move. Make a note of who you have to change your address with and the services that need to be notified.

De-Clutter
The first step before moving is to de-clutter your home. Start months in advance if you have to, especially if you have been in the same home for a long time. Go through each room and all the contents of your cupboards. When it comes to packing you will be so grateful that you have de-cluttered your home and started early. Make a list of each room to de-clutter.

Pack & Label
Collect your boxes and packing essentials. Your moving pack should include:
- Boxes
- Bubble wrap
- Tissue paper
- Scissors
- Packing tape
- Marker
- Labels
It’s a good idea to have all your items packed up in boxes, sealed and labeled with the items and what room they are to be placed into at the new home.
This way the removalists can work quickly and efficiently at getting you settled into your new home. Pack your jewellery and important documents separately to be moved by you. This way you will know where they are at all times.

What You Are Moving?
Get a few quotes from two or three removalists. Check with them what they will and will not move. Some removalists are keen to do the job but will not move any IT equipment, electronics or Artwork. Be specific about what you are moving, and how they ensure it’s transported safely. Ask about insurance for any items that are damaged in the move.
Pets
Your pets don’t like change. Have their pet carrier and walking leads ready to go with you to the new home. Place them in a room with their bedding and some of your things too.
This way they don’t have to watch the entire move and wonder what’s going on.
Access To Home
The removalist will ask you if there is easy access to your old home and the new home you’re moving to so they can easily park their truck as close as possible.
If you are moving to a street with apartments it’s sometimes harder to get a park right out the front of the building. Don’t forget to allow time for stairs or waiting for a lift to take up the furniture. This can add more time to the move.
- Secure parking as close as possible to the new and old home
- Check with the apartment building on what their process is for moving in
- Select an experienced removalist
- Have everything packed in boxes and ready to go
- Pack a refreshment box with tea, coffee and bottled water
