Statement Pieces – Bringing Personality to a Room
Sometimes, all it takes is one special piece to give a room character, adding a lamp with a beautiful shade, cushions with a favourite fabric, or a vintage chair with a story.
I’ve always loved the way one special piece can change the feeling of a room. It doesn’t have to be expensive, or even particularly grand. Sometimes it’s simply something that catches your eye and makes you smile.
In my own home, some of my favourite pieces are the ones that have a story behind them. A pair of old chairs I found and loved enough to have new slipcovers made, a large ornamental birdcage that I painted and moved into another room, and a beautiful French bedhead that caught my eye while travelling in Italy.

These are the pieces that give a room personality. They don’t have to match everything else, and that’s rather the point. They bring something unexpected into the room, a little character and a memory.
I think a home becomes much more interesting when we allow ourselves to decorate with the things we love, rather than trying to make everything perfect. A statement piece can be the starting point for a room, or simply the one thing that makes you stop and look.

This beautiful bedhead was the feature of this bedroom in an apartment we stayed at in Rome, not far from the Piazza del Popolo. The owner had sourced this piece from a market in Paris.
Statement pieces are meant to be fun and creative. A large oversized mirror or a grouping of pieces from your favourite collection. Fill your home with pieces you love.
It’s all about how the things we fall in love with that can shape a room.
